Speed meters improve cutting performance at Celsa Nervacero
Celsa Nervacero, together with Russula, installed four laser speed meters for its two-strand bar mill located in Bilbao, Spain. The speed meters helped improve the cutting performance of the dividing shear for large diameter products.
When the bars left the last stand, the speed increased slightly and thanks to the new speed meters, the control system was able to compensate for the changes and the dividing shear made perfect cuts.
Scope of Supply
Russula supplied four non-contact laser speed sensors, especially designed for steel mill and industrial environments. The sensors are robust, laser surface velocimeters, which record the exact rolling mill speed, indispensable readings for mill optimization. Russula also supplied the software engineering and startup support.
Results
During a ten-day maintenance shutdown in April 2021, the four laser speed meters were successfully installed before the dividing shears for both strands. Russula technology experts were on-site to support the commissioning, calibration, and testing.
Even during the commissioning period, the Celsa Nervacero and Russula team were able to optimize shear cutting for rolling large diameter products, larger than 20 mm. By incorporating the new laser speed meter input into the shear cut control algorithm, the team noticed immediate improvements; the dividing shear was now able to make perfect cuts.
