Novelis, the leading producer of flat-rolled aluminum products and the world’s largest recycler of aluminum, chose Russula to modernize its slitter no. 2 with a new electrical and automation package. The plant is located in Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo, Brazil.
Russula will provide the complete electrical and automation solution for upgrading slitter no. 2. The main objective is to replace legacy equipment with a modern control system that will improve productivity, equipment reliability and process stability.
As part of the electrics and automation upgrade of slitter no. 2, the Novelis plant requested the implementation of vibration measurement and condition monitoring tools for the motors. Russula will implement Iba InSpectra, which is a customized tool for conditioning monitoring that collects and analzes data from vibration sensors mounted on the motors. This tool will be fully integrated with the automation system, informing the maintenance department via trend graphs, alerts and alarms, to better perform preventive maintenance on the motors.
The shutdown period to upgrade slitter no. 2 is scheduled for 12 days in November, 2017. During that time the switch-over to the new control system and commissioning tests will be performed The control upgrade will help Novelis leverage the latest control technology to produce excellent quality, tightly wound, straight-sided slit coils.
The Novelis Pindamonhangaba factory celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. When the plant began operations it had a capacity of 30,000 tpy. After a series of upgrades and expansions, the plant production rate today is 600,000 tpy. It is one if the largest aluminum rolling and recycling centers in Latin America and has transformed Brazil into one of the largest recyclers of aluminum cans in the world. The Pindamonhangaba plant stands out for its operational excellence and leading-edge equipment. Russula is honored to be chosen by Novelis as the electrics and automation supplier of choice for this important upgrade project.
