After Big River Steel’s modern mini-mill acquisition by U.S. Steel in January 2021, to diversify its business beyond the integrated steelmaking it traditionally specialized in, the Fortune 500 company now plans to invest $3 Billion to build a new mini-mill that will be adjacent to Big River Steel. Together, the two facilities will be known as Big River Steel Works and will form a 6.3 million ton “mega mill”. The new plant will rival the first plant in terms of investment and jobs, creating 900 new direct jobs with an average pay of over $100,000 annually, in addition to thousands of construction jobs. This investment will make Big River Steel Works the largest private project in the history of Arkansas.
Several years ago, we embarked on a transformative vision for U. S. Steel. Now we celebrate, as we take another significant step forward in becoming the steel company of the future. This facility is engineered to bring together the most advanced technology, to create the steel mill of the future that delivers profitable sustainable solutions for our customers.
David B. Burritt, U. S. Steel President & CEO
The key to BRSW is its technology. Unlike other U.S. Steel big mills, like Mon Valley Works, Gary Works and Granite City Works, this new next-generation highly sustainable and technologically advanced steel mill will feature two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) to remelt scrap with a capacity of 3.3 million tpy, a state-of-the-art endless casting and rolling line, and advanced finishing facilities.
With its extraordinarily low-cost structure, energy-efficient production equipment, and advanced capabilities, this project will yield significant benefits to our customers, stockholders, communities, employees, and contribute to a more sustainable world.

BRSW has awarded Russula the construction of one of the largest water treatment plants (WTP) ever built for the metallurgical sector. The water plant is divided into 13 circuits that treat daily more than 65 million liters (17M gal) per hour. The WTP is composed of a make-up water treatment area, contact and non-contact cooling circuits, an effluent treatment area and an advanced effluent recovery system.
This water treatment plant represents the know-how acquired by Russula over many years and includes new processes such as the effluent recovery system, which applies the latest techniques in water treatment. As a result, the new plant will significantly exceed the environmental requirements and drastically reduce water consumption by recovering the vast majority of the water discharged into the environment.
Consequently, the new modern mill will apply to become LEED® certified. BRS, which has an eco-friendly Russula WTP installed and currently in operation, received this certification back in 2017, and recently received the first-ever ResponsibleSteel™ site certification, which sets a global benchmark for leading practices in environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibility for steel production.
On February 8th, 2022, U.S. Steel broke celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the new BRSW mill. The project completion and commissioning are anticipated for 2024.
